Power failure affects pumping into Brixton reservoir
A power failure at the Crosby Pump Station has affected pumping into the Brixton reservoir. The power outage started at 22:00 on Wednesday, 15 November 2023 and lasted until 04:00 on Thursday, 16 November.
As a result, pumping was halted at the Crosby Pump Station, which pumps water into the Brixton reservoir. Supply at the Brixton reservoir and tower, as well as the Hursthill 1 and 2 reservoirs, has been severely impacted.
Although pumping at the Crosby Pump Station has resumed into the Brixton reservoir, water levels at the Brixton reservoir are currently critically low, and as a result, pumping cannot be resumed until the water levels improve. The Brixton tower is currently empty. The Hursthill 1 and 2 reservoirs are both critically low.
Pumping from the Brixton reservoir into the tower has not yet resumed, therefore areas supplied by the Brixton reservoir and the tower are currently without water supply. Alternative water supply is being provided to the impacted suburbs.
Johannesburg Water teams are monitoring the situation and have closed the Brixton reservoir outlet to build capacity and recover the system more swiftly.
See the full list of affected suburbs here. Scroll down the list to find the areas supplied by the Brixton and Hursthill 1 and 2 reservoirs.
