Johannesburg Water upgrades nearly 50 000m of water and sewer pipes
Ensuring the reliability and efficiency of water and sewer systems is paramount to sustaining the City of Johannesburg’s growth and development.
Amidst the challenges posed by ageing infrastructure, Johannesburg Water’s Pipe Replacement Programme stands as a beacon of progress and determination to improve service delivery by addressing the challenge of continuous and uninterrupted water supply, and ensuring the residents of Johannesburg are afforded the dignity and hygiene that goes hand in hand with sanitation services.
While the task at hand is undeniably daunting, recent achievements underscore the Pipe Replacement Programme’s efficacy and impact. In the last financial year (2022/23) Johannesburg Water replaced 19km of water infrastructure and an impressive 28km of sewer pipes across all regions. Surpassing its target of replacing 16km of sewer pipes, this demonstrates Johannesburg Water’s commitment to addressing critical infrastructure needs and ensuring the continued delivery of essential services to residents.
The significance of these accomplishments cannot be overstated, especially in light of the challenges posed by ageing infrastructure and existing infrastructure renewal backlogs due to budget constraints; and without proactive intervention, the risk of service disruptions and physical losses looms large. As such, the Pipe Replacement Programme serves as a proactive and positive measure to mitigate these risks, safeguarding the integrity and functionality of essential water and sewer systems. By investing in pipeline replacement, Johannesburg Water can both enhance infrastructure performance as well as minimise physical losses and ensure the long-term sustainability of vital services.
With continued investment and commitment, Johannesburg can pave the way for a sustainable future where water and sewer systems remain reliable, efficient, and accessible to all.

Flagged areas for high water consumption: Doornkop North meter
Residents of Doornkop, Tshepisong, Slovoville, and Motholesville are urged to take immediate action to reduce water consumption. This comes as Johannesburg Water has identified the Doornkop North meter as one of the Entity’s top 10 highest consuming meters in the City of Johannesburg.
The Doornkop North reservoir provides bulk water supply to parts of Soweto, and within the supply zone of this reservoir, Doornkop, Tshepisong, Slovoville, and Motholesville have been flagged as the areas of concern, where water consumption is at an all-time high.
The high consumption is mainly due to illegal connections and on-property leaks, especially within informal settlements.
The ongoing high consumption has a negative impact on other suburbs in these supply zones, including Dobsonville and Protea Glen.
Although the Entity has ongoing intervention strategies to reduce the burden on the system, including the regular overnight throttling of the reservoir to build capacity, we however, appeal to residents to please work with us to use water wisely. This is essential in alleviating the pressure on the system and ensuring a sustainable water supply for all residents in the long term.
