Update: Eikenhof pump station
Several Johannesburg Water systems lost storage capacity as a result of the power outage at City Power’s Orlando substation that happened on Thursday evening, May 9. The outage affected Rand Water’s Eikenhof pump station, which supplies Johannesburg Water’s systems. Consequently, the following systems were impacted: Commando System (Hursthill, Brixton and Crosby), parts of Lenasia, Randburg, Roodepoort, Soweto, Crown Gardens and Eagles Nest.
Commando System
The overall capacity continues to be critically low. The Brixton reservoir is currently closed but will be opened to 50% overnight. The tower is critically low, but pumping is ongoing. The technical team will monitor the levels overnight and adjust accordingly in the morning based on the recovery rate. The Crosby, Hursthill 1, and Hursthill and 2 reservoirs remain critically low. Hursthill 2 will be closed overnight to build capacity. Poor pressure to no water is expected in the entire Commando System.
Eagles Nest
The Eagles Nest reservoir remains low but stable. Although there is high demand, it is supplying normally.
Randburg/Roodepoort
Following the outage, some of the towers in the Roodepoort system were left empty, however, they are gradually improving. The Horizon and Constantia towers have improved and are supplying normally, while the Waterval and Quellerina towers are still critically low. Johannesburg Water will monitor the systems overnight.

Update: Eikenhof pump station
Following the power outage at City Power’s Orlando substation that occurred at 18:45 on Thursday evening, 9 May, several Johannesburg Water systems lost storage capacity.
The outage at the power utility’s substation lasted for several hours and negatively affected Rand Water’s Eikenhof pump station, which supplies Johannesburg Water’s systems. Consequently, the following systems were impacted: Commando System (Hursthill, Brixton and Crosby), parts of Lenasia, Randburg, Roodepoort, Soweto, Crown Gardens and Eagles Nest.
Commando System
The overall capacity is critically low. The Brixton reservoir is currently closed, and the tower is empty; however, pumping has resumed. Once the tower builds capacity, the reservoir will be gradually opened again, and the technical team will monitor the water levels throughout the day. The Crosby, Hursthill 1, and Hursthill and 2 reservoirs are critically low. Poor pressure to no water is expected in the entire Commando System.
Eagles Nest
The Eagles Nest reservoir has substantially dropped in water levels compared to Thursday. However, it is supplying normally.
Randburg/Roodepoort
Following the outage, some of the towers in the Roodepoort system were left empty, particularly the Constantia, Horizon, Waterval, and Quellerina towers. However, pumping has resumed, and some are gradually filling up. Johannesburg Water will monitor them throughout the day as the system improves.

Update: Eikenhof pump station
Power was restored at midnight. This follows the power outage at City Power’s Eikenhof substation that occurred on Thursday evening, 09 May, which subsequently affected Rand Water’s Eikenhof pump station.
While pumping resumed, full pumping was reached at 03:30 by the bulk supplier. Johannesburg Water impacted systems are recovering and the Entity continues to monitor the situation and will have further engagements with Rand Water this morning.
Further update will be provided later this morning.

Sandton 1 and 2 to be closed tonight due to high demand
The Sandton 1 and 2 meters will be closed tonight as part of the Entity’s water demand management strategy, and to provide relief to the overall system. The systems will be closed from 19:00 tonight until 04:00 on Friday, 10 May.
Furthermore, as part of internal interventions, Johannesburg Water will throttle (reduce flow and pressure) all the Sandton system’s reservoir outlets today to retain and therefore improve capacity in the systems.
The areas supplied by the Linbro Park and Marlboro direct feeds will be affected by no water. On Friday morning after the system is reopened, it will take about three hours for the water supply to return.
While the rest of the Sandton systems will not be affected, poor pressure may be experienced in some areas, particularly the Bryanston and Illovo tower supply zones.
Therefore, residents are requested to use water sparingly until the system recovers.
Johannesburg Water will monitor and provide further updates as the situation improves.
