Aeroton reservoir maintenance to impact parts of Soweto and southern suburbs
Johannesburg Water will be conducting a planned maintenance at the Aeroton reservoir from 10:00 on Friday, 2 February until 20:00 on Friday, 9 February.
The maintenance, which is for the purpose of conducting a structural assessment and cleaning at the reservoir, will affect parts of Soweto and southern suburbs, including
Aeroton, Ormonde, Ormonde View, Orlando East and West, Diepkloof, Diepkloof extension, Diepkloof extensions 2 and 10, as well as the Baragwanath and Doctor SK Matseke Hospitals.
This is part of routine maintenance work, which is crucial to ensure continuity of water supply, improved services to customers, as well as to minimise water losses.
During this time, customers should expect low pressure to no water, particularly in high-lying areas. Alternative water supply will be provided through water tankers, especially in high-lying areas, as and when necessary.
Once the maintenance is completed on the Friday, all the reservoirs will be steadily filled over the weekend and water supply should be stable again by the start of the new week.

Palmiet and Eikenhof systems to be impacted by Eskom maintenance on 21 January
Rand Water has notified Johannesburg Water of a planned maintenance by Eskom on a transformer supplying Rand Water’s Zuikerbosch Treatment Plant. This will affect water supply within Rand Water’s distribution network on Sunday, 21 January 2024 from 08:00 – 15:00. This maintenance is conducted to ensure compliance with Occupational Health and Safety requirements.
Rand Water systems that will be affected are Palmiet and Eikenhof. During this period, pumping capacity of the Palmiet system will be reduced by 23% for eight hours and pumping capacity for the Eikenhof system will be reduced 12% for 24 hours.
This reduction in pumping will affect Johannesburg reservoirs storage capacity. Therefore, during this period Johannesburg Water customers are requested to reduce consumption to prevent depletion of Johannesburg Water’s storage capacity, and ultimately low pressure to no water.
The Eikeinhof system supplies water to the following Johannesburg Water infrastructure: (RW Meredale system) all Soweto Reservoirs including Eagles Nest, Alan Manor, Naturena, Kibler Park, Crown Gardens, Aeroton and Orlando East Reservoirs, (RW Waterval system) most Randburg Reservoirs and Towers, (RW White Ridge system) most Roodeport Reservoirs and Towers, (RW Weltevreden system) other Randburg Reservoirs and the Commando system.
The Palmiet system supplies water to the following Johannesburg Water infrastructure: Sandton system, Midrand system, including South Hills Tower, Alexander Park, Linksfield, Randjieslaagte and Modder Hill Reservoirs.

Sandton system to be affected by Rand Water maintenance on Thursday
Rand Water will be conducting an unplanned maintenance which will affect the Sandton systems. The maintenance work will take place from Thursday, 11 January from 17:00 until Friday, 12 January at 13:00.
The bulk supplier will be replacing a broken isolation valve at the Sandton 1 meter. The maintenance work is necessary to ensure a continuous water supply to the systems.
Both Sandton 1 and 2 meters will be closed. Therefore, there will be no water supply coming into the Sandton areas as water will be isolated (closed) throughout the duration of the repairs.
The impact should be mostly low pressure for customers; however, no water may be expected in some areas, particularly high-lying areas. Alternative water supply will be provided should it be necessary.
Once repairs are completed on Friday, all the reservoirs will be steadily filled over the weekend and water supply should be stable again by the start of the new week.
Full list of suburbs supplied by the affected systems:

Johannesburg Water urges Soweto residents to curb consumption
Johannesburg Water urges the residents of Soweto to urgently reduce their water consumption as the demand on Rand Water’s Meredale reservoir is high. As a result, this has affected the reservoir’s water levels and put the bulk supplier’s system under immense strain and furthermore, threatens the sustainability of bulk supply.
The Meredale reservoir supplies the bulk of Johannesburg Water’s Soweto reservoirs and towers, as well as the Eagles Nest and Crown Gardens reservoirs.
Soweto’s Doornkop reservoir in particular, is under severe strain. While the Zondi reservoir has been experiencing extremely high demand which has necessitated immediate interventions to reduce the demand and manage supply.
Although Johannesburg Water has ongoing daily mitigation strategies in place – which are part of the Entity’s Water Conservation and Water Demand Management Strategy – the demand on the system continues to be far too high. Due to high demand on the Meredale reservoir and as part of a mitigation strategy, the following reservoirs will be throttled: Doornkop, Zondi, Diepkloof and Power Park reservoirs.
To ensure sustainability and a steady supply of water, the Entity urges Soweto residents to use water sparingly, especially since consumption is expected to increase as schools and industries reopen in the next week.
This coincides with the implementation of the City of Johannesburg’s Level-1 water restrictions. Under level-1 water restrictions, the watering of gardens is prohibited between 6am and 6pm from 1 September to 31 March annually. Furthermore, residents are not permitted to wash cars, paved areas and driveways using hose pipes. Car wash businesses are requested to use buckets instead of hosepipes.
Here are simple water-saving habits to implement into your daily routine:
• Do not leave taps dripping
• Wash your car on the grass with grey water as this will water your lawn at the same time
• Shorten your showering time. Take shallow baths and avoid filling your bathtub to a depth greater than 100mm
• Use a glass of water to rinse when brushing your teeth
• Reuse grey water to water your garden or pot plants
• Fix all leaking plumbing features in your house.
Johannesburg Water is committed to providing sustainable water. As such, water restrictions will be enforced by fines to customers who contravene the Water Services By-Law.
