Roll out of prepaid smart meter project to parts of Soweto postponed

The switching of Johannesburg Water’s open mode to prepaid smart meters in parts of Soweto has been postponed to 22 January 2024.

Following the switching from open mode to prepaid smart meters in Cosmo City from 1 November, the rolling out was supposed to extend to Diepkloof, Orlando East and West, as well as Orange Farm in December 2023.

The date for the switching in Orange Farm will be communicated in due time.

As such, Johannesburg Water is urging the residents of Orlando East and West, Diepkloof, as well as Orange Farm to ensure that they all have a Customer Interface Unit (CIU). CIUs are display units that are installed inside houses and linked to prepaid water meters and are crucial for loading units when purchasing water credits.

Customers who still do not have CIUs can contact 011 688 1699.

The refusal of switching to prepaid smart meters will lead to Level 3 water cuts, and residents will then have to pay to be reconnected.

Power failure affects pumping into Brixton reservoir

Power failure affects pumping into Brixton reservoir

A power failure at the Crosby Pump Station has affected pumping into the Brixton reservoir. The power outage started at 22:00 on Wednesday, 15 November 2023 and lasted until 04:00 on Thursday, 16 November.

As a result, pumping was halted at the Crosby Pump Station, which pumps water into the Brixton reservoir. Supply at the Brixton reservoir and tower, as well as the Hursthill 1 and 2 reservoirs, has been severely impacted.

Although pumping at the Crosby Pump Station has resumed into the Brixton reservoir, water levels at the Brixton reservoir are currently critically low, and as a result, pumping cannot be resumed until the water levels improve. The Brixton tower is currently empty. The Hursthill 1 and 2 reservoirs are both critically low.

Pumping from the Brixton reservoir into the tower has not yet resumed, therefore areas supplied by the Brixton reservoir and the tower are currently without water supply. Alternative water supply is being provided to the impacted suburbs.

Johannesburg Water teams are monitoring the situation and have closed the Brixton reservoir outlet to build capacity and recover the system more swiftly.

See the full list of affected suburbs here. Scroll down the list to find the areas supplied by the Brixton and Hursthill 1 and 2 reservoirs.

Smart meter project rollout postponed in Orlando East

Further details will be shared in due course.

Rabie Ridge reservoir and tower
Both the reservoir and tower maintained stability throughout the day and are supplying at 30% configuration. Both outlets will be throttled further overnight to build capacity.

Linden1 tower
Critical low, poor pressure expected in the supply zone. The tower is supplied normally throughout the day but lost capacity during the peak demand. Tower is expected to improve overnight.

Commando System
• Brixton reservoir: Low but supplying normally. Outlet will be throttled overnight to build capacity.
• Brixton tower: Critically low due to the reservoir’s low levels. Poor pressure to no water is expected in the supply zone.
• Hursthill 1 and 2 reservoirs: Both reservoirs are critically low and poor pressure is expected in both supply zones. The Hursthill 1 reservoir has been configured to boost supply, while the Hursthill 2 reservoir outlet will be closed overnight to build capacity.
• Crosby reservoir: Critically low, and poor pressure is expected in the supply zone.

Yeoville Pump Station and reservoirs
Currently supply normal but may be affected by a burst on the supply line to Yeoville reservoirs . The main supplying the Yeoville reservoirs has been isolated to drain it for repairs. This isolation will affect areas fed off the Forest Hill tower and Yeoville reservoirs. Repairs will commerce from 16 November 2023 at 16:00, however, there is no expected time of completion.

Affected areas: Highlands, Berea, Yeoville, Rand View, Bellevue East, Observatory, Hillbrow, Oakdene, Townsview, Rosettenville, The Hill, Tower By, Robertsham, Chrisville, Forest Hill, Lindbergh Park, Gillview, West Turffontein
