Rabie Ridge reservoir and tower
Both the reservoir and tower have improved and maintained stability during the day. The outlet for both the reservoir and tower are operating at 30% configuration. Poor pressure is expected at high-lying areas of the supply zone.

Linden1 tower
Supplied normally during the day while on downwards trend (loosing capacity). The tower is currently empty; however, improvement is expected overnight.

Commando System
• Brixton reservoir and tower: Reservoir supplied normally during the day while on downwards trend (loosing capacity) and is currently low but supplying normally. Outlet will be closed overnight to build capacity for the next day. The tower maintained stability throughout the day and supplying normally.
• Hursthill 1 reservoir: Currently low. The system is reconfigured to boost the supply.
• Hursthill 2 reservoir: Critically low. Poor pressure is expected in high-lying areas of the supply zone. Outlet will be isolated overnight to build capacity for the next day.
• Crosby reservoir: Improved overnight and supplied normally during the day. Poor pressure is expected in high-lying areas of the supply zone.

Aeroton system
Both the reservoir and tower improved and supplying normally.

Yeoville system
Repairs were completed in Percy Street this afternoon, however, another problem occurred on the pumping main as a result of isolating system overnight for repairs. The team is attending to the problem. Further updates will be provided to customers. No water is expected, and water tankers are currently provided to the affected areas.

Affected areas include: Highlands, Berea, Yeoville, Rand View, Bellevue East, Observatory and Hillbrow.
The following reservoirs will be throttled to 90% overnight to retain water and build capacity:
• Brixton
• Hursthill 2
• Rabie Ridge
• Diepsloot

Customers supplied by the abovementioned reservoirs may experience poor pressure to no flow. Alternative water supply has been arranged for the affected areas.

Residents are requested to observe level-1 water restrictions which are implemented from 1 September to 31 March. These restrictions prohibit the use of hosepipes to water gardens, wash cars, clean driveways, as well as fill up swimming pools and water features between 06:00 and 18:00. Instead, the use of greywater is encouraged.

Rabie Ridge reservoir and tower
The reservoir is currently low and the tower maintained stability during the day. The outlet for both the reservoir and tower are operating at 30% configuration. Poor pressure is expected at high-lying areas of the supply zone.

Linden1 tower
Improved overnight. Currently maintaining stability and supplying normally.

Commando System
• Brixton reservoir and tower: Reservoir is currently low but supplying normally. Outlet will be closed overnight to build capacity for the next day. The tower maintained stability throughout the day and supplying normally. Pumping capacity is reduced to 50% due to reservoir’s low levels.
• Hursthill 1 reservoir: Improved overnight but remains low. The system is reconfigured to boost the supply.
• Hursthill 2 reservoir: Improved overnight but remains low. Poor pressure is expected in high-lying areas of the supply zone.
• Crosby reservoir: Improved but remains low. Poor pressure is expected in high-lying areas of the supply zone.

Aeroton system
Reservoir is currently low, and tower is on bypass. Poor pressure is expected in certain parts of supply zone. Improvement expected overnight.

Linden1 tower
Improved overnight. Currently maintaining stability and supplying normally.

Commando System
• Brixton reservoir and tower: Both remained stable throughout the day and are supplying normally.
• Hursthill 1 reservoir: Currently low. Poor pressure is expected in the supply zone. The reservoir is reconfigured to boost the supply.
• Hursthill 2 reservoir: Maintained stability throughout the day, but level remains low. Poor pressure is expected in high-lying areas of the supply zone.
• Crosby reservoir: The reservoir levels are low. Poor pressure is expected in high- lying areas.
The following reservoirs will be throttled to 90% overnight to retain water and build capacity for Saturday:
• Brixton
• Hursthill 2
• Rabie Ridge
• Diepsloot

Media Statement

Johannesburg Water systems improving and moving in an upward trajectory

Johannesburg Water’s reservoirs and towers continue showing steady improvement. As at this morning, Thursday 9 November, the Entity’s systems had shown notable improvement over the last two weeks.

This follows weeks of water supply interruptions experienced in various areas across the City of Johannesburg.

This is the result of a combination of factors, including Johannesburg Water’s mitigation strategies to boost supply and improved bulk supply from Rand Water. The mitigation interventions include throttling (reducing pressure and flow) the outlets of critical reservoirs to 90% overnight, and sometimes completely closing some systems where necessary, to help build capacity for the following day.

Since the beginning of this week the following systems, which had been severely impacted, are performing at satisfactory levels:
• The South Hills tower started the week at 65% and was sitting at 80% for two consecutive mornings.
• The Brixton tower (Commando system) started the week off at 88% on Monday and has been full for the last two days.
• The Hursthill 1 reservoir (Commando system) began the week at 40% capacity and by Thursday morning, was sitting at 60%.
Johannesburg Water continues to monitor all systems and implement daily mitigation strategies to help boost supply. The Entity thanks residents who are observing Level-1 water restrictions and customers are urged to continue using water sparingly.
