Phase two of Rand Water Phase Palmiet Pumpstation maintenance begins

The second phase (two of three) of the maintenance work at Rand Water’s Palmiet Pumpstation began today as scheduled.

The maintenance is scheduled to take place until Wednesday, 17 July 2024, during which pumping will be reduced to 68% for 50 hours.

This means that Rand Water will be pumping to our systems at 68%. This reduced pumping means that there will be intermittent supply to some systems, poor pressure for others, and no water for other systems. Therefore, the systems will respond differently to the reduced pumping from the bulk supplier.

Areas that are fed from the direct feeds, South Hills Tower, Alexander Park, as well as the Linksfield Reservoir will be affected immediately; while areas that are supplied through reservoirs, including all the Sandton and Midrand reservoirs and towers will be affected gradually as all the reservoirs’ capacity gets depleted.

The following Johannesburg Water systems will be impacted during the maintenance period: all Sandton and Midrand systems, the South Hills Tower, as well as the Alexandra Park, Randjieslaagte, and Linksfield reservoirs.

Full recovery of the systems will take up to five days or longer after maintenance has been completed. However, the areas supplied by the Sandton and Midrand systems will take longer to recover because the reservoirs need to first build capacity after being empty.

Johannesburg Water will make arrangements for alternative water supply at strategic points within the residential areas.

Areas fed by Palmiet.

Phase three of the Palmiet maintenance is scheduled to begin on 29 July 2024.

The second phase (two of three) of the maintenance at Rand Water’s Palmiet Pump Station is scheduled to take place from 15 to 17 July 2024, during which pumping will be reduced to 68% for 50 hours.

Areas that are fed from the direct feeds, South Hills Tower, Alexander Park Reservoir, as well as the Linksfield Reservoir will be affected immediately when the maintenance begins; while areas that are supplied by the Sandton and Midrand reservoirs and towers will be affected gradually as all the reservoirs’ capacity gets depleted.

The following Johannesburg Water systems will be impacted during the maintenance period: all Sandton and Midrand systems, the South Hills Tower, as well as the Alexandra Park, Randjieslaagte, and Linksfield reservoirs.

Johannesburg Water will make arrangements for alternative water supply at strategic points within the residential areas. However, residents are encouraged to store water in preparation for the maintenance.

Rand Water maintenance: Zwartkopjes and Eikenhof update Zwartkopjes Pump Station and Daleside Booster Station

26 June 2024 – 12:00

Media Statement

Rand Water maintenance: Zwartkopjes and Eikenhof update Zwartkopjes Pump Station and Daleside Booster Station

The Rand Water maintenance work at the Zwartkopjes Pump Station and Daleside Booster Station has been completed and both systems are pumping at 100%. Systems supplied by the Daleside Pump Station (Orange Farm, Ennerdale, and Lawley systems) remain low but are steadily improving. Further improvement is expected in the next two to three days.

Systems supplied by Zwartkopjes are also steadily recovering; however, the following systems are still struggling:

  • Crown Gardens Reservoir and Tower remains critically low, while the tower is empty. The reservoir outlet is currently closed to build capacity. Residents are experiencing no water supply; however, alternative water supply has been
  • Eagles Nest Reservoir is critically low and poor pressure to no water is expected in the supply zone.

Eikenhof Pump Station

Work is in progress and the station is currently pumping at 50%. It is expected to be pumping at 67% overnight. Most Johannesburg Water systems supplied by Eikenhof are currently low or empty.

Soweto Systems

Overall, Soweto systems are low, but supplying normally. However, Doornkop West and Protea Glen reservoirs are currently strained and poor pressure to no water is expected.

Commando System

The incoming supply is low and is impacting all the reservoirs within the system. Alternative water supply continues to be provided.

  • Crosby Reservoir is declining but supplying normally
  • The Brixton Reservoir is critically low, and the outlet is closed, while the tower is empty. No water is expected in the supply zone. Pumping will resume once the supply improves.
    • Hursthill 1 and 2: both reservoirs are currently empty due to no incoming supply. No water is expected in the supply zone.

    Randburg System
Most Randburg reservoirs and towers are currently empty due to no incoming supply. Johannesburg Water continues to provide alternative water supply while the maintenance work continues.

However, the following reservoirs are low, but supplying normally: Boschkop, Cosmo City, Honeydew, and Randpark Ridge.

    Roodepoort System
Most systems are also currently empty due to no incoming supply; except the Horizon Tower, which is low, but supplying normally.

    Lenasia Systems
All reservoirs are currently low, and poor pressure to no water supply is expected. Johannesburg Water continues to provide alternative water supply while the maintenance work continues.

Rand Water maintenance: work at Daleside Booster Station completed

The Rand Water maintenance work at the Zwartkopjes Pump Station and Daleside Booster Station was completed last night. The repairs began on Monday morning, 24 June, at 07:00 and were completed last night.

Zwartkopjes is currently pumping at 80% and it is anticipated that pumping will be at 100% by this evening. However, pumping resumed today at 12:00, and it is currently pumping at 50%.

Affected areas include those supplied by the Orange Farm, Ennerdale, and Lawley systems; and residents are experiencing poor pressure to no water. In the meanwhile, arrangements have been made for alternative water supply.

Although the larger Rand Water maintenance has been completed, it will take several days for systems to recover. Residents should start to see an improved water supply by Thursday morning.
