Water shortages in the Hursthill and Brixton Area

On Monday 29 March 2021, a major power failure impacted the Rand Water Eikenhof system which supplies water to Johannesburg Water Crosby, Brixton, and Hurst Hill reservoirs. This led to these reservoirs running empty. Since the power supply was restored, Johannesburg Water has been trying to restore sufficient capacity without much success as Rand Water is still struggling to provide the required flow.
Johannesburg Water received confirmation that Rand Water has since reconfigured systems to increase flow to Brixton, Crosby and Hursthill. An improvement will be noticeable overnight as Rand Water increases the flow to feed to these areas. There are water trucks in the affected areas to assist residents.

We apologise for the inconvenience caused and appeal to affected residents to be patient as services are being restored.

Shutdown to affect Midrand

Media Statement

Shutdown to affect Midrand

Rand Water will undertake urgent repairs on the pipeline that is leaking later today Saturday 27 March2021. The shutdown will start at 18h00 for the duration of 28hrs and will affect greater Midrand, Halfway House, President Park, Rem Allendale and Chloorkop which is supplied from Ekurhuleni.

Due to the large scale of the area, we may not be able to rollout tanks to all affected areas and we appeal to all residents to use water sparingly, only for human consumption so that we can stretch reservoirs capacity and limit times of no water.

Residents will be updated on the Johannesburg Water social media pages.

Apologies for the inconvenience.

Johannesburg Water implemented water restrictions by between 20 – 45% in the last week to ensure a sustainable supply for all after Rand water informed the utility of water restrictions from their side due to increase in demand. Johannesburg Water has been in contact with the bulk water supplier Rand Water to increase supply for the reservoir to recover much quicker as a result of high demand in the area.

We plead with all residents of the city of Johannesburg to use water sparingly and residents report all service interruptions through the call centre. The teams are monitoring the reservoir levels and water tankers will be rolled out as and when the need arises per area. All updates will be available on our social media pages and apologies for the inconvenience.

Rand Water Meredale and Waterval reservoirs critically low

03 March 2021
Media Statement
Rand Water Meredale and Waterval reservoirs critically low

After the unsuccessful G23/Q2 Shutdown that was carried out over the weekend, Rand Water recommissioned its infrastructure in order to restore water supply. During the recommissioning process, an Air Valve on the Q2 pipeline failed and caused a major water leak in Naturena that required to be repaired.

The Rand Water Eikenhof Pump station required to be decommissioned in order to repair the faulty air valve. This repair work has now been completed and the recommissioning process has begun.

As a result, the Meredale and Waterval reservoirs are now at critically low levels. This will affect supply to some of our reservoirs and towers.

Eikenhof is now pumping at maximum flow, however we have not started seeing an improvement in our system.
