Palmiet and Eikenhof systems to be impacted by Eskom maintenance on 21 January

Rand Water has notified Johannesburg Water of a planned maintenance by Eskom on a transformer supplying Rand Water’s Zuikerbosch Treatment Plant. This will affect water supply within Rand Water’s distribution network on Sunday, 21 January 2024 from 08:00 – 15:00. This maintenance is conducted to ensure compliance with Occupational Health and Safety requirements.

Rand Water systems that will be affected are Palmiet and Eikenhof. During this period, pumping capacity of the Palmiet system will be reduced by 23% for eight hours and pumping capacity for the Eikenhof system will be reduced 12% for 24 hours.

This reduction in pumping will affect Johannesburg reservoirs storage capacity. Therefore, during this period Johannesburg Water customers are requested to reduce consumption to prevent depletion of Johannesburg Water’s storage capacity, and ultimately low pressure to no water.
The Eikeinhof system supplies water to the following Johannesburg Water infrastructure: (RW Meredale system) all Soweto Reservoirs including Eagles Nest, Alan Manor, Naturena, Kibler Park, Crown Gardens, Aeroton and Orlando East Reservoirs, (RW Waterval system) most Randburg Reservoirs and Towers, (RW White Ridge system) most Roodeport Reservoirs and Towers, (RW Weltevreden system) other Randburg Reservoirs and the Commando system.

The Palmiet system supplies water to the following Johannesburg Water infrastructure: Sandton system, Midrand system, including South Hills Tower, Alexander Park, Linksfield, Randjieslaagte and Modder Hill Reservoirs.

Systems Update

Soweto system

Several Soweto reservoirs and towers are experiencing low water levels as a result of the present heavy demand on Rand Water’s Meredale reservoir. Consequently, Johannesburg Water is urging Soweto residents to urgently reduce their water consumption. The Entity has been implementing mitigation strategies to manage the water demand. Some areas fed by the following reservoirs will experience poor pressure, while high-lying areas are affected by no water.

  • Doornkop reservoir
  • Zondi reservoir
  • Power Park reservoir (supplying at 80% capacity)
  • Bramfischerville reservoir (supplying at 50% capacity): Customers in phases 7 and 9 will experience poor pressure. Certain areas supplied by the Protea Glen tower and direct feeds are experiencing poor pressure to no water.

Randburg system

  • Kensington B reservoir: reservoir levels have improved and recovered.
  • Kensington B tower: tower levels are still low. Poor pressure is expected in parts of the supply zone.
  • Cosmo City reservoir: reservoir levels have improved, and supply is normal.

Areas affected.

Commando System

The overall average incoming supply pressure to the system is normal; however, roaming water tankers are still being provided for high-lying areas, which are affected by poor pressure.

  • Hursthill 1 and 2 reservoirs: Hursthill 1 continues to be stable and is supplying normally, while Hursthill 2 is low and will be closed overnight to boost capacity.

Areas affected

The following reservoirs will either be closed or throttled to 90% overnight to retain water and build capacity:

  • Soweto: Doornkop, Power Park, Orlando East, Diepkloof, and Zondi
  • Commando: Brixton, Hursthill 2
  • Crown Gardens
  • Alexandra Park (closed)

Customers supplied by these reservoirs may experience poor pressure to no flow. Alternative water supply has been arranged through water tankers for the affected areas. Johannesburg Water continues to monitor the above systems.

Residents are requested to observe level-1 water restrictions which are implemented from 1 September to 31 March. These restrictions prohibit the use of hosepipes to water gardens, wash cars, clean driveways, as well as fill up swimming pools and water features between 06:00 and 18:00. Instead, the use of greywater is encouraged.

Soweto system

Due to the current high demand on Rand Water’s Meredale reservoir, several Soweto reservoirs and towers are experiencing low water levels. As such, Johannesburg Water is urging Soweto residents to urgently reduce their water consumption. In the meanwhile, the Entity has been implementing mitigation strategies to manage the water demand, which are beginning to yield positive results. Randburg system

Due to the major burst pipe in Randpark Ridge that was repaired on Wednesday, where water was isolated (closed) throughout the repairs, a few Randburg systems have deteriorated in capacity.

  • Boschkop reservoir: reservoir levels decreased significantly and are currently critically low due to increased demand on the system. Residents will have poor pressure to no water, particularly in high-lying areas.
  • Kensington B reservoir: reservoir levels have decreased. Poor pressure to no water is expected in parts of the supply zone.
  • Linden 1 reservoir and tower: the reservoir is low while the tower is critically low. Poor pressure is expected in parts of the supply zone.
  • Cosmo City reservoir: Rand Water’s Weltevreden Park reservoir is currently undergoing cleaning for maintenance purposes. As a result, this is affecting the water supply to the reservoir’s supply zones, particularly parts of Cosmo City and extensions, and surrounding areas, as well as Weltevreden Park and surrounding suburbs.

Areas affected.

Commando System

The overall average incoming supply pressure to the system is normal; however, roaming water tankers are still being provided for high-lying areas, which are affected by poor pressure.

  • Brixton reservoir: The reservoir levels are stable and supplying normally. The outlet continues to be closed overnight to boost capacity.

Areas affected

  • Brixton tower: The tower is stable and is enjoying good levels. Supply is normal.

Areas affected

  • Hursthill 1 and 2 reservoirs: Hursthill 1 continues to be stable and is supplying normally, while Hursthill 2 is low and will be closed overnight to boost capacity.

Areas affected

  • Crosby reservoir:  the reservoir continues to be stable and is supplying normally.

Areas affected

The following reservoirs will either be closed or throttled to 90% overnight to retain water and build capacity:

  • Soweto: Doornkop, Power Park, Orlando East, Diepkloof, and Zondi
  • Commando: Brixton, Hursthill 2

Sandton system to be affected by Rand Water maintenance on Thursday

Rand Water will be conducting an unplanned maintenance which will affect the Sandton systems. The maintenance work will take place from Thursday, 11 January from 17:00 until Friday, 12 January at 13:00.

The bulk supplier will be replacing a broken isolation valve at the Sandton 1 meter. The maintenance work is necessary to ensure a continuous water supply to the systems.

Both Sandton 1 and 2 meters will be closed. Therefore, there will be no water supply coming into the Sandton areas as water will be isolated (closed) throughout the duration of the repairs.

The impact should be mostly low pressure for customers; however, no water may be expected in some areas, particularly high-lying areas. Alternative water supply will be provided should it be necessary.

Once repairs are completed on Friday, all the reservoirs will be steadily filled over the weekend and water supply should be stable again by the start of the new week.
