City Power area outage impacts Johannesburg CBD central suburbs
There are water issues in Johannesburg CBD, Marshalltown, Ferreirasdorp, and surrounding areas. This is due to a City Power area outage on Friday night, 30 June 2023 that affected the Hector Norris pump station in Turffontein, which supplies water to the above-mentioned areas and surroundings.
The pump station is still offline, and Johannesburg Water technical teams are in the process of organising a generator. Pumping is estimated to resume later today once a generator has been connected to the site.
Areas in the Hector Norris supply zone, especially higher lying areas, are affected with no water. Lower lying areas are experiencing poor pressure to no water.
Water tankers are being arranged for the affected areas.
Further updates will be provided when they become available.

Emergency repairs at Crosby pump station
We regret to inform you that our Crosby pump station has experienced an emergency repair that requires shutting off the water supply to the Brixton reservoir, which receives supply from the Crosby system.
In order to minimise the outage period, repairs will take place this evening when the supply from Crosby reservoir will be closed at 21:00. We estimate that repairs will be completed by 06:00 tomorrow morning, on 23 June 2023. During this time, the outlet of Brixton reservoir will also be closed. Johannesburg Water working to resolve supply challenges
Johannesburg Water recognises the plea and frustration of our customers who are impacted by the ongoing water interruptions. We acknowledge that from time to time we encounter challenges in the process of supplying water to our customers.
This has detrimental effects to customers, and we offer our unconditional apology for the inconvenience this is causing.
Over the past few weeks, we have experienced reduced supply into our reservoirs, partly due to the vandalism of City Power’s Orlando Substation on 8 June 2023, which feeds Rand Water’s Eikenhof pumpstation. This caused water outages in multiple suburbs across the city. Although this has been repaired, our system however, is slow to fully recover as various other reservoirs within the City of Johannesburg had also run dry in this process and are currently gradually recovering.
Then on Sunday, 11 June 2023, City Power’s transformer at the Brixton substation caught on fire. This, again, subsequently affected Johannesburg Water’s Brixton, Hursthill and Crosby reservoir systems.
There have also been some operational challenges which we timeously experience from Rand Water which affects our reservoirs, but we continue to be in regular contact with the bulk supplier to resolve such issues.
We appeal for patience and understanding as we work hard to address the current water interruptions.
We are monitoring the recovery of the reservoirs, are providing alternative water tanking and our regular updates to customers.

Insufficient Rand Water supply to Yeoville reservoirs
Rand Water conducted emergency work last night at the Vereeniging purification plant, which affects the Zwartkopjes booster station. As a result of the temporary isolation, water supply to the Yeoville reservoirs has been reduced.
Customers in the Yeoville reservoir zone will be impacted by low pressure to no water, as two reservoirs within the Yeoville complex are critically low to empty. The reduced supply from the bulk supplier is being monitored and has been escalated to Rand Water.
Yeoville reservoir zone:
Hillbrow, Parktown, Spes Bona, Linksfield, Observatory, Jeppestown, Bruma, De Wetshof, Cyrildene, Forest Town, Fellside, Highlands, Kensington, Fairwood, Bezuidenhout Valley, New Doornfontein, Bertram, Lorentzville, Judith’s Paarl, Troyeville, Vrededorp, Cottesloe, Doornfontein, Berea, Yeoville, Killarney, Orange Grove, Westcliff, and Constitution Hill.
Johannesburg Water urgently requests customers to reduce consumption during this time. Customers in higher lying areas will experience no water or poor pressure.
Further updates will be provided when they become available.
